Talk Summary:

The period between 1649 and 1660, spanning the British Republic and the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell, is perhaps the strangest and most dramatic period in the history of Britain and Ireland, marking a political experiment unique in these islands’ complex past. Anna Keay examines the lives of those caught up in the turmoil, famous and not so famous, to create a rich social tapestry of an extraordinary time.
