Talk Summary:
David Carpenter looks at how Henry III – one of England’s most important, if neglected, medieval kings – dealt with the baronial rebellion of 1258 led by Simon de Montfort, the brutal civil war that followed, and how he recovered power. Carpenter sheds new light on the characters of Henry and De Monftfort, as well as Queen Eleanor and Lord Edward – the future Edward I.

David Carpenter is Professor of Medieval History at King’s College London, and the author of numerous books, including an acclaimed two-volume biography of Henry III and a new study of Magna Carta for Penguin Classics.
