Though now somewhat neglected, five major cities of the classical world – Tyre, Carthage, Syracuse, Ravenna and Antioch – all rose to remarkable prominence, and their stories embrace such extraordinary figures as Alexander the Great, Nebuchadnezzar, and Archimedes, and were enveloped by the Roman, Arab and Norman conquests. Katherine Pangonis offers new perspectives on these ancient sites.
Katherine Pangonis is a historian who focuses on the medieval world of the Middle East and Mediterranean regions and the interactions between East and West during this period. She divides her time between France and Lebanon, and is a consultant on Middle Eastern topics for various UN agencies.
