Speaker: Tomiwa Owolade

Topic: Black British History: This is Not America

Venue: Ondaatje Lecture Theatre, Radcliffe Centre

Time: 14:00-15:00 Sunday 17 September

Talk Summary:

All too often the history of Black Britons, as well as that of other ethnic minorities in the UK, is viewed through the prism of the United States. But, given the poisonous history of race relations in the US, this often creates more heat than light and skewers the very different experiences on either side of the Atlantic. Tomiwa Owolade argues that Britons should be wary of American cultural dominace and create new, more illuminating narratives based on Britain’s national and global past.

Tomiwa Owolade is one of Britain’s brightest young cultural commentators. He writes a regular column for The Times and is a contributing editor at the New Statesman. His latest book, which has met with considerable critical acclaim, is This is Not America: Why Black Lives in Britain Matter.
