Venue: Vinson Building

Time: 11.30-12.30 Saturday 14 September

Talk Summary:

Recently released documents reveal the amazing story of a British officer, Colonel Clarke, who led a mission to mislead the Nazis in pursuit of their global ambitions. The story takes in the creation of the Commandos and the SAS, the masterful hoodwinking of Rommel before the decisive battle of El Alamein, and the invention of a deception machine that would contribute enormously to the Allied victories at Normandy and in Italy.

Robert Hutton spent 16 years covering the British government for Bloomberg and is now sketchwriter for the Critic. He is the author of several books, including Agent Jack: the True Story of MI5’s Secret Nazi Hunter, and his latest, The Illusionist: the True Story of the Man who Fooled Hitler (Weidenfeld & Nicolson).
